I decided to write today about design minimalism, the web and effective poster ideas.
Smashing Magazine held a poster design contest called: Redesign the Web, Redesign the World! which I entered. The challenge was to design thought-provoking poster that challenged people’s ideas about web design, both in functionality and aesthetics.

If you’re a freelancer or starting out a small business then take a moment to look though this selection of well designed invoice templates.
Design is probably not at the front of most small business owners minds and who can blame you? Who care’s what your invoice looks like right? It’s just an official document that’ll probably get filed away somewhere and never see the light of day again. So why bother with buying an invoice template? —In short—because anything that has your business’ logo on it, is a representation of the quality of your brand. A scruffy invoice represents a scruffy business.
Invoice templates are a great solution to the classic design conundrum that most small business’ face. You want something that looks great—nice and professional—but a designer wants to charge you a disproportionally high fee for something unique. It also requires meetings and reviews which take time. An invoice template can solve both problems.
Browse this great, reasonably priced, selection of premium designer invoice templates and find something that will suit your business requirements.

When it comes to famous graphic designers, the American designer Paul Rand is right up there with the best of them.
He was a household name in publication, advertising, and corporate identities which is why today he is regarded as one of the innovators of modern corporate American design. He should also be praised for having convinced many large business groups of the value of investing in a designed identity.
As a boy he showed interest in typography—painting signs for his father and events held at school. Despite his obvious inclination towards this area, his father apparently didn’t support his career. He wasn’t convinced that this was a skill set to build a career with. As such it’s not surprising that many sources cite that he was largely a self-taught designer.

I’ve been trawling Vimeo again and found some lovely CG typography shorts to give you a shot of inspiration this morning.
These use a combination of type, design, CG compositing and visual effects to create visually appealing motion graphic, although all with very different methods.
Popular CG programs for rendering type are Maya and Cinema 4D. After it’s rendered post-production, like color grading, is done in After Effects.

Design balance is very rarely described by non-designers because it’s more of a feeling that people will get. A person will just have a positive reaction to something that seems to sit neatly, look clean and be arranged in a logical order. This theory is discussed in Design Theory 1: Composition.
Balance and composition go hand in hand. It is immpossible to arrange a good composition unless it’s balanced correctly, so balance forms the underlying structure of composition and page harmony.
